Won’t somebody please think of the children?

It doesn’t take much sleuthing on comic book store shelves to see that not many of those high-profile periodicals are geared towards kids. Nah. Superheroes, these days, seem to live in stories for thirty and forty year-old boys. Why, I remember sitting in a comic book convention panel a number of years ago where a prominent industry creator lamented the fact that once upon a time, decades ago, Superboy regularly sold in the hundreds of thousands of copies – something that title can no longer accomplish.

Every Wednesday (new comic book release day) leaves many wondering, “won’t someone think of the children?”

Well, last week, we did. And this week, we’re thinking of them again. In an itty, bitty way. And quite Hellishly.

Comic book creators, Art Baltazar and Franco are famous for their works on the Eisner-award winning DC Comics’ series, Tiny Titans. C’mon! Who doesn’t know where “Aw yeah!” come from? Tiny Titans was a title made for kids – that actually asked them for drawing submissions, eventually published in the back pages of the monthly letter column. How awesome is that? I know of at least one Dad who would share his daughter’s drawings with Baltazar at comic book conventions! It’s a pretty amazing thing to get kids so excitedly involved with reading and art in that way.

Now Baltazar and Franco have turned their heads towards Dark Horse Comics and Mike Mignola’s famous creation, Hellboy. You wouldn’t necessarily think that the character could lend himself to a younger audience – but under the pen and pencil of these two creators, it works here. itty bitty Hellboy, as a five-issue mini series, is a title that is not only accessible for kids, but lovers of comics – of all ages – will enjoy the series.

And the entire Hellboy cast is here! Find out why Hellboy has such a big hand! Who are all of his strange friends? Discover what B.P.R.D. stands for! Thrill at their investigation of a ghost named Rasputin!

Fans of Hellboy will have a blast, seeing their favourite characters in a new light. Kids will laugh along at these heroes and, I’m sure, eagerly wait for next month’s issue. So make the run to your local comic book shop and pick up itty bitty Hellboy #1 – preferably with your kids. It’s a gateway drug into reading and drawing and having fun!

Aw yeah, indeed!

Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
