I’ve played my share of video games, both in the mature privacy of my home console (Skyrim) and in the shared online world against a bunch of kids who relentlessly kick my ass and call me names (Call of Duty).
It’s no great secret that video games, like comic books before them, have become fertile grounds to cross-pollinate into other mediums: chiefly film and television and even books. In fact, video games themselves have become bigger business than even Hollywood could ever dream – and Hollywood dreams big!
Once in a while, a video game makes the jump to the printed medium – and comic books are a particularly fertile ground to continue stories, expand on created artwork, and indoctrinate new or lapsed players into video-gaming.
Today is one of those days.
Today we get the MMOG online war game-turned-comic book mini-series: World of Tanks #1!
World Of Tanks #1
Written by: Garth Ennis
Illustrated by: Carlos Ezquerra
Published by: Dark Horse Comics
I had heard of World of Tanks, but have never played World of Tanks. I like video games as much as the next person…but I’m not that into the online playing aspect of them (namely because I’m not that good at them and grew weary, pretty quickly, from the belittling aspects of playing against those that are far superior to me). I’d rather sit on my couch in isolation, peruse maps and learn dragon shouts.
That said, a lot of people absolutely love playing online games and World of Tanks is one of the biggest and most popular.
With over 110 million online players, World of Tanks is truly a massive worldwide phenomenon, befitting of the MMOG acronym. (Massively Multiplayer Online Game, for those not in the know.)
Following in the footsteps of that online experience, Dark Horse comics has published a comic written by the acclaimed Garth Ennis (Preacher, Hellblazer) a favourite of many of the writers here on Biff Bam Pop!, who has, over the years, reinvigorated the war-time story, publishing a number of praised World War I and World War II comic book series’. This time he’s joined by luminous illustrator, Carlos Ezquerra (Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog) for a hard-hitting and tense tale on the European battlefront just before D-Day, 1944.
In World of Tanks #1, we have an untested British crew driving an unconventional Cromwell tank into occupied France – all the while being hunted by a veteran German panzer force! This is Garth Ennis at his best and you can catch a sneak preview of the brilliant first issue right here!
Make the run to your local comic book shop today and pick up World of Tanks #1, the series that rolls out all of the action and tension of war…BOOM!
