Look, you don’t get something like Black Hammer/Justice League: Hammer of Justice every day.
Sure, you might get more than one comic book columnist talking about it on a particular exciting comic book release Wednesday, as evidenced by E.A. Henson’s weekly Heroes & Villains column from earlier today. But it’s not often that two competing comic book publishers share awesome intellectual property in a co-branded miniseries, written by one of comicdom’s most sought-after (and busiest) talents.
Then again, maybe that talent is why the properties got merged into a single publication.
Everyone knows DC Comics and the world’s most recognizable superhero team in the Justice League.
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman. Yeah. You know them.
Who you may not know, however, is the world of Black Hammer, featuring the heroes called Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, Abraham Slam and Barbalien. We’ve highlighted the series before, first here and then here, and it’s one of our favourites.
The interesting thing about Black Hammer and it’s many characters and ever-expanding time lines and titles, is that under co-creators Jeff Lemire and original artist Deam Ormston, the series has always been a commentary on superheroes and comic books. Although you may be unfamiliar with them, each character has elements of the characters you know from both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Jeez if that Barbalien isn’t the long-lost brother of the Martian Manhunter. Only in Black Hammer, the otherworldly alien barbarian is a closeted homosexual.
And that’s what makes Black Hammer, the comic book and Black Hammer, the and ever-expanding time line with multiple titles stand apart from other superhero-centric comic books on the shelves today. It’s both a commentary and a character study.
And it makes for fascinating stories.
