The spooky month is now well upon us and we here at Biff Bam Pop! would be remiss to not nudge our fearless readers towards another fearfully entertaining comic book offering. It’s another example of perfect reading, or even a perfect gift, for the Halloween season!
You could argue that Dark Horse Comics has been home to horror – and the horror anthology – for a long, long time.
I still remember the first iteration of the comic book publisher’s feature Dark Horse Presents offering from the mid 1980’s. Although not always a horror-themed anthology, it was a publication that gave voice to both new and legendary writers and artists working in the comic book industry. Paul Chadwick’s Concrete made a first appearance here, as did John Byrne’s Next Men. Frank Miller’s Sin City famously premiered in serialized form within the pages ofthe anthology. Still, among the various off0the0beaten-path noir and superhero creator-owned tales, there always tended to be a horror-genre story filling its wonderful pages. Licensed horror properties such as Aliens and Predator were first published in comic book form within Dark Horse Presents – and those titles and characters have found hungry audiences ever since.

Today, Dark Horse Comics, the publisher, returns to the anthology format with a fully horror-tinged offering: the deliciously overstuffed Horseman Halloween Annual 2023!
Written and illustrated by a horrifically talented ensemble that includes Angela Slatter (Castle Full of Blackbirds), Lukas Ketner (Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter), David Dastmakchian (Count Crowley), Tyler Crook (Harrow County), Frank Cvetkovic (The House) and many others, the Headless Horseman Halloween Annual 2023 one-shotis a 56-page romp through adventurous lands and dismal places. It features five stories full of ghouls, ghosts, monsters, vampires and all sorts of wicked fun, with each tale framed by the comic book’s host, the Headless Horseman. Of course.
It’s perfect late-night reading during the darkest nights of our favourite time of year.
